FTAA - COMMITTEE OF GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES ON THE PARTICIPATION OF CIVIL SOCIETY

SECOND THEMATIC MEETING WITH THE PARTICIPATION OF HEMISPHERIC CIVIL SOCIETY

Santiago, 23 September 2003

In fulfillment of the recent mandates of the FTAA Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC) at the meeting held in Puebla, Mexico, from 8 to 10 April 2003, and of the resolutions adopted at the Twenty-first Meeting of the Committee of Government Representatives on the Participation of Civil Society, Chile makes the following proposal for holding a Thematic Meeting in Santiago.

Objectives

  • For members of the Negotiating Group on Services to report to civil society of the FTAA member countries in greater depth on the content of the FTAA negotiations on services, emphasizing the most important issues and the way the different topics are addressed.

  • For different sectors of civil society (services providers, workers, business people, NGOs, academics, among others) to be able to convey to the negotiators their observations and concerns regarding the negotiations on services at the FTAA.

  • To encourage dialogue between government negotiators and civil society, and to study future forms of participation.

    Participants
    The Thematic Meeting is aimed at civil society representatives, especially those interested in the issue of services, from countries participating in the FTAA negotiations and will provide opportunities for exchanges with members of the Negotiating Group on Services and members of the Committee of Government Representatives on the Participation of Civil Society. The meeting will also receive support from the Tripartite Committee (OAS, IDB, ECLAC).
