FTAA - COMMITTEE OF GOVERNMENT REPRESENTATIVES ON THE PARTICIPATION OF
CIVIL SOCIETY

CONTRIBUTION IN RESPONSE TO THE OPEN INVITATION

Name: Oscar Torres
Organization: Grupo de Estudios Agrorregionales, GEA

Executive Summary

The rural world is the sector most affected by free trade, which has produced greater poverty. There has also been a lack of measures to take advantage of rural conditions to solve population and community settlement problems, as well as a loss of resources in the rural world.
Projections: a reduction in the growth of global agricultural production. Prices of agricultural products will continue to be affected by the long-term trend in prices, which place them below inflation rates, except in the case of fruit, vegetable and other exportable products.

Conditions to be demanded in the FTAA negotiation process:

Protect the environment (air, water and land) and natural resources. Innovate agricultural institutions, such as public services.
Expand the negotiation approach to include the protection of national products.
Establish bodies for the participation of the rural grass-roots sector.
