FTAA - NEGOTIATING GROUP ON
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS PRESS COMMUNIQUE The Seventeenth Meeting of the FTAA Negotiating Group on Intellectual Property Rights (NGIP) was held in Panama from 2 to 3 December 2002. The NGIP Chair, Mr. Orlando Jorge Mera, of the Dominican Republic, presided over the meeting. The delegations of Canada, Caricom, Andean Community, El Salvador, United States, Mercosur, Mexico, and Panama congratulated the NGIP Chair on his appointment and pledged their support in completing the work.The Group’s discussions focused on the items as set out in the approved agenda (attached). All the items were addressed. The NGIP approved a Work Plan to fulfill the mandates of the Quito Ministerial Declaration for the current cycle of negotiations, from November 2002 through the next Ministerial Meeting (to be held in the fourth quarter of 2003). The NGIP addressed the two civil society contributions received since its last meeting, held from 17 to 19 June 2002. The following 17 countries were in attendance: Argentina, Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Jamaica, Mexico, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Trinidad & Tobago and the United States. The next Meeting of the NGIP will be held in January 2003 on a date to be determined by the TNC.
