FTAA - NEGOTIATING GROUP ON
INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS PRESS COMMUNIQUE The sixteenth meeting of the FTAA Negotiating Group on Intellectual Property Rights (NGIP) took place in Panama on June 17-19, 2002. Delegates from the following 23 countries were present: Argentina, Bahamas, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Peru, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay and Venezuela.Following the Mandate of the Declaration of Buenos Aires, in this final meeting before the next FTAA Ministerial, the NGIP made additional consolidations in the NGIP draft text, and approved its report to the Trade Negotiations Committee (TNC). The discussions in the meeting followed the approved agenda (attached). The NGIP discussed all items on the agenda. The NGIP has received five civil society submissions since its last meeting, which was held May 15-17, 2002. The date of the next meeting of the NGIP will be after the Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Trade and will be determined by the TNC.
